Lisa loves animals and has dogs, rats, cats, guinea pigs, and snakes. She is passionate about animal rescue and live music - traveling across the country to see a favorite band is a pretty regular occurrence! Being out hiking in the woods enjoying the scenery with her beloved dogs is another favorite hobby, and also checking out the Pokemon Go scene in whatever city she happens to be in at any given time (coffee and dog leash in hand). It’s no secret that there are countless historic places in Georgia‘s cities. Our metropolitan areas like Atlanta, Savannah, and Augusta have huge historic districts spanning several blocks. But you don’t have to go to our urban areas to discover Peach State’s history. Many of our small towns offer up just as much evidence of our rich past. One of the most historic rural counties in Georgia is Wilkes County. This east-central Georgia county has a population of under 10,000 but has nearly 30 listings on the National Register of Historic Places.
One historic building that's not a museum but still welcomes the public is the Mary Willis Library. It was originally built in 1889 and was the first free library in Georgia.

Another beautiful historic property in Washington is the Robert Toombs House State Historic Site. This was once the home of Robert Toombs, an orator who represented Georgia in the U.S. Senate.

The historic site is now operated as a house museum, and tours are offered. Learn more from the Georgia State Parks website.

The Kettle Creek Battlefield is located just outside of Washington. It was the site of the Battle of Kettle Creek, a 1779 Revolutionary War battle won by the Patriots.
