Most visitors will likely have to take the trip up M-22 to get to the northernmost point of Leelanau County. The roughly 45-minute drive from Traverse City is one of the most beautiful roads you can travel in Michigan. Savor every minute of that trip as you pass through the quaint harbor towns of Sutton’s Bay, Omena, and Northport.

The park is broken up into two sections. This is the entrance to the north part of the park. It leads visitors to the day use section of the park, pavilion, campgrounds, and lighthouse. The park also has three mini-cabins.

The Grand Traverse Lighthouse is full of great views and important history. This structure plays a big role in the shipping industry that dominates the Great Lakes. While a new structure now serves as a warning for ships, visitors can still climb to the top of the tower for incredible views.

There are tons of great campsites around Michigan, but what I love most about Leelanau State Park is that you can set up your site right on the beach. Whether it’s easy lake access or the perfect setting to watch the amazing Lake Michigan sunset, you can’t go wrong with a family camping trip here.

Leelanau State Park is separated into two trail systems, the southern one taking you to Cathead Bay. Not only do these trails bring you through some beautifully forested scenery, but it lets out to a breathtaking dunes landscape. This is where I’ve spent most of my time when taking day trips to the state park. The kids love to slide down the dunes before cooling off in the water.
