To me, history is one of the most fascinating subjects. It’s just always growing and expanding. West Virginia has such an incredible history! We are so lucky to live in such an amazing state packed full of such historical events. These nine battles are only a few of the battles that have occurred in our state.
1) The Battle of Carnifex Ferry took place on September 10, 1861 in Nicholas County, WV.
There was an estimated 250 casualties in this battle.
2) The Battle of Droop Mountain took place on November 6, 1863 in Pocahontas County.
Pictured above is the Confederate graves of the battle, which had an estimated 526 casualties.

3) Fort Henry, which is located in Wheeling, WV, is the site of the last battle of the American Revolution.
Fort Henry is actually the site of two battles during the American Revolutionary War, once in 1777 and once more in 1782.
4) The Battle of the Greenbrier River was located in Pocahontas County, WV.
This battle had an estimated 80 casualties and took place on October 3, 1861.
The Traveller's Repose is the same site of the original stage coach stop that burned down after the Civil War.
The original stage coach stop was hit by 28 cannon balls during the Battle of the Greenbrier River.
5) The Battle of Harpers Ferry was fought September 12 through September 15 of 1862 at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.
Thomas Stonewall Jackson led a portion of Robert E. Lee's army at the Battle of Harpers Ferry, where they surrounded and captured the Union camp.
6) Battle of Moorefield, which occured in Hardy County, took place on August 7, 1864.
Pictured above is a sign at a Presbyterian church in Moorefield that states that it was used as a hospital during the Cival War.
There was an estimated 531 casualties in the Battle of Moorefield.

7) The Battle of Philippi, which is located in Barbour County, happened on June 3, 1861.
This was the site of the first land battle between the North and South. There was an estimated 30 total casualties.
The Philippi Covered Bridge was used by both Union and Confederate troops in the Battle of Philippi.
This bridge is the oldest and longest covered bridge in West Virginia, and is one of the two remaining covered bridges in Barbour County.
8) The Battle of Point Pleasant, often called the Battle of Kanawha, was fought on October 10, 1774.
This battle was fought mostly between Virginia militia and Shawnee and Mingo Indians.
9) The Battle of Rich Mountain, which is located in Randolph County, happened on July 11, 1861.
There has an estimated 346 total casualties at the end of this Union Victory.
