Key West is gearing up for a thrilling celebration that will transport visitors back in time to the literary world of Ernest Hemingway. Hemingway Days 2023 is just around the corner, promising an unforgettable experience for fans of the renowned author and admirers of his adventurous spirit. From July 18 to July 23, 2023, this exciting island will come alive with a variety of events and activities that pay homage to Hemingway’s literary prowess, his love for sports, and his fondness for the easygoing lifestyle in Key West. Are you ready for Hemingway Days 2023?!
Key West is set to host another year of Hemingway Days - a gathering of devoted Ernest Hemingway fans to commemorate the 124th anniversary of the author’s July 21st birth.
The highlight of the festival is undoubtedly the Hemingway Look-Alike Contest, taking place at Sloppy Joe's Bar on 201 Duval St. This iconic establishment was a favorite haunt of Hemingway during his residency in Key West in the 1930s.
Various events are also planned for Hemingway Days throughout the nearly-weeklong celebration - a three-day marlin tournament will be held, allowing participants to partake in the same thrilling sport that Hemingway cherished...
...and attendees can indulge in literary readings, insightful presentations by scholars, and even join Sloppy Joe's whimsical "Running of the Bulls," a boisterous street fair that captures the vibrant spirit of Key West.
A 5k run and paddleboard race will also pay tribute to Hemingway's love for sports. To top it off, the winner of the prestigious Lorian Hemingway Short Story Competition, overseen by Ernest's granddaughter, will be announced.
Have you ever attended a Hemingway Days festival in Key West before? What was your favorite aspect of the festival? Shout out in the comments section! You can also learn more about attending the festival and what to expect by visiting The Florida Keys website.
Don’t forget! You can stay for the entire festival when you find a Key West rental from VRBO. Why not make an entire vacation around this annual event? Also, while you’re there, make sure to find some time to visit Hemingway’s polydactyl cats at the museum! I’ve been to this museum before, and the cats are extremely friendly, sunbathing all over the property.
