I was born and raised in sunny Southern California and will never tire of the West Coast, although I spent several years living in Southeast Asia, about as far from California as you can get. Wherever I am in the world, I love straying from the beaten path, experiencing local life, and discovering hidden gems - camera in hand. The beach is my happy place and when I am not there (or writing), you will usually find me baking, watching movies, and cuddling my pugs. I have traveled around the country and around the world, and it never, ever gets old. Being able to combine my passion for travel and my love of writing is nothing short of a dream.
One thing that is not lacking, aside from food, in Southern California is entertainment. Every day of the year, you can find fun and interesting things to do, from live shows, concerts, and films to immersive experiences and festivals, and so much more. But if you are looking for perhaps one of the most extraordinary productions anywhere, make plans to see the tableaux vivants (meaning, “living pictures”) at this art festival in Laguna Beach, CA.
The annual Festival of the Arts in Laguna Beach has been showcasing local artists and thrilling art lovers for 90 years. It is one of the oldest and most highly-acclaimed fine art shows in the country. This year’s event began on July 5 and runs daily until through September 1, 2023.
One of the most beloved - and most spectacular - aspects of the festival is the renowned “Pageant of the Masters,” with nightly performances at 8:30 p.m., from July 7 through the end of the festival.
Each evening, audiences gather in the open-air amphitheater under the stars to be amazed as classic artworks literally come to life in a 90-minute presentation.
This year’s theme, “Art Colony: In the Company of Artists,” is a celebration of the 90th anniversary of the very first presentation of these “living pictures.”
In the Pageant of the Masters, real people pose as the characters in elaborate stage sets, recreating famous classical and contemporary works of art, including paintings, sculptures, and more.
The incredible stage illusions are combined with original orchestra music, wonderful storytelling, theatrical smoke, and moving lights for an enthralling presentation.
Prepare for a deeply incredulous feeling as you stare at what could easily be a two-dimensional painting and realize the skill and artistry involved in creating the precise perspective, shading, and details of these artworks.
In addition to the Living Art show, the festival features an open-air gallery showing the works of over 100 Orange County artists. Browse a massive variety of artworks and styles including paintings, photography, ceramics and glass, sculpture, and more.
Come early to the pageant, not only to browse or purchase some fine art, but to grab a glass of wine or an al fresco dinner, enjoy live entertainment, meet the artists, etc.
There is truly nothing like this ‘life imitates art’ extravaganza. Have you ever attended the annual Pageant of the Masters? What do you think of this spectacular art presentation? For more information and to purchase tickets, visit the Festival of the Arts website, or follow the Pageant of the Masters on Facebook for the most up-to-date information and news. If you are visiting Laguna Beach for the festival and plan to stay overnight, you will absolutely love this beachfront hotel.
