She is passionate about animal rescue and live music - traveling across the country to see a favorite band is a pretty regular occurrence! Being out hiking in the woods enjoying the scenery with her beloved dogs is another favorite hobby, and also checking out the Pokemon Go scene in whatever city she happens to be in at any given time (coffee and dog leash in hand). Because the Nutmeg State is so small, if you’ve lived here for a long time, it can sometimes feel like you’ve explored just about every inch of it already. There’s always more to see and do here, though – the number of hidden gems in Connecticut is astronomical! From under-appreciated museums to secluded parks, there’s so much to discover in our great state. One of our favorite secret spots is a beautiful little park tucked away near Mystic, CT. It’s a 30-acre preserve known as the Peace Sanctuary, and it’s quite easy to see why it got that name. Check it out:
Mystic is one of the best small towns in Connecticut, but it's primarily known for its riverfront scenery. The Peace Sanctuary borders the Mystic River, so you can enjoy some water views, but the forested areas are just as lovely.
Snakes are quite common here in warm weather, but remember that they generally are just as scared of us as we are of them, and we are the ones in their territory. Watch your step, don't disturb them, and you will be fine.
Whether you visit in the winter when you can see right through the trees to the water or in the warm months, when everything is lush and verdant, this is a beautiful area that brings such a sense of peace.
This is a great trail to explore in the summer months thanks to all the shade, but that can also mean mosquitos! Pick up some insect repellent from REI to stay itch-free.
