I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: middle Georgia often gets ignored by travelers, and it’s a shame! Sure, our northern regions have amazing mountains, and you’ll find tons of history and scenic beaches all along the coast. But the central portion of the state is just as worthy of a visit. You’ll find some really neat spots here, from numerous small towns to the diverse urban center of Macon. But when you’re looking for a summer day trip in Georgia, few areas are better than somewhere near a body of water. As we all know, summer means outdoor fun, but it also means brutal heat. Being near a cool breeze and a river or lake to jump in can mean the difference between a refreshing afternoon or a day spent miserably soaked in sweat. One of the best lake towns in Georgia is the small city of McRae-Helena, home to Little Ocmulgee Lake.
