Idaho is home to some of the most incredible scenic drives. These roads will take you past jaw-dropping scenery and to remarkable destinations. But, just because a road is scenic, it doesn’t mean it is always safe and you feel comfortable driving it. In fact, there are several terrifying and downright dangerous roads dotting the Gem State. In no particular order, here are just a few of these terrifying drives you can take in Idaho.
Did you know that Highway 75 is actually rated one of the most dangerous roads in America during the winter by the United States Department of Transportation? This is a beautiful drive but it is a two-lane highway that takes you from the Sawtooth Valley to Central Idaho. You don’t want to miss the views in this area of the state but just don’t tackle this route when snow is falling.
Highway 12 connects Lolo, Montana to Kooskia, Idaho. It is one beautiful drive and there are many areas where you’ll want to stop and pull out your camera. But, be aware as this road is full of many sharp curves and steep climbs. It’s definitely not a drive for a timid driver.
This stretch of highway in southern Idaho may not seem like it would be scary and terrifying but it is a popular stretch of road for wildlife crossing, resulting in many fatal vehicle accidents. Deer, elk, and other large animals tend to come down from the mountains and graze near the road and it can often be difficult to see these creatures, especially as the sun is setting. This is one stretch of road you’ll want to be extra attentive as you travel.
Highway 95 is one of the longest scenic drives in the state and makes for a great road trip. But, it is also considered one of the most dangerous roads in Idaho. This is because of the large number of fatal car crashes that occur on this highway every single year. And while many of these crashes occur during the winter months, summer is just as dangerous as there is an increase in visitors on the road.
This is another stretch of road that can be scary and extremely dangerous during the winter months. In fact, it isn’t uncommon for this highway to completely close down during winter storms. However, during the summer, this is a great drive for your summer bucket list as you will travel through the gorgeous Bitterroot Mountains.
Located near Coeur d’Alene, Fourth of July Pass is another scary mountain pass during the winter months. This mountain pass in the Rocky Mountains is approximately 3,000 feet above sea level and if a storm is expected, it is best to avoid this mountain pass and find another route — it’s one place you don’t want to be when heavy snow is falling.
