We all know that Connecticut roads can be a bit chaotic, to put it mildly. The Nutmeg State has a lot of people crowded into a small space. Between all that traffic, drivers distracted by cell phones, and our unpredictable weather, driving in Connecticut can be a scary activity! There are plenty of scenic roads in Connecticut that can make driving feel quite tranquil and pleasant, but we also have quite a few highways that are pretty terrifying. We’ve gathered up a list of some of the dangerous roads in Connecticut that are particularly scary. Stay safe out there, and keep your eyes on the road!
1. I-95, especially between Stratford and Bridgeport
It's not really a surprise that I-95 tops this list. The lengthy highway stretches all the way up and down the East Coast, and the stretch between Stratford and Bridgeport consistently ranks among the deadliest roads in the state. The combination of so many cars traveling at such a high speed makes many accidents here fatal.
Merritt Parkway is one of the prettiest roads in the state. It's an amazing stretch of highway with distinctive bridges and beautiful trees. However, the trees that make it so lovely also make it quite dangerous. Storms often cause large branches to fall, and many drivers have been killed on the Merritt. The Department of Transportation has grown much more aggressive at clearing away trees to make the road safer, and it's typically shut down during severe weather.
Route 1 is an enchantingly beautiful drive that runs along the coastline. It goes through some of the prettiest areas of the state and passes by several great beaches. Unfortunately, it's also one of the deadliest for pedestrians. There are no sidewalks down much of the road, and most of the crosswalks don't have lights or signals to alert drivers to the presence of pedestrians.
Route 6 is a beautiful backroad, but its twists and turns mean it's the site of many accidents. The rolling hills and tranquil forest scenery often lull drivers into a false sense of calm, but make sure to always stay alert on this country road.
This merge is a nightmare area that forces you to come to a complete stop before merging into traffic going upwards of 60 miles per hour. An average of 100 crashes a year have occurred here over the last few years. The Connecticut Department of Transportation has recently announced changes to the on-ramp that will hopefully alleviate some of the problems.
