Even if you’re driving from the south or southeast of Carmel Valley Village, you’ll likely take Highway 101 since it is the fastest route. Although there is a lot to be said about enjoying the scenery of backroads and discovering the California countryside.
Drive inland from Carmel and you’ll find Carmel Valley Village.
This quiet town has a California cowboy coastal vibe, along with many great wineries. Think upscale country-western with lots of wineries.
The hiking trail is located in Garland Ranch Regional Park, this area feels somewhat hidden.
The 3.3-mile loop will take you through the beautiful green woods next to the Carmel River.
The trail is rated as moderate, and we agree that’s an accurate rating. The trail is pretty steep both on the way up and down. There are several areas without much shade, so you’ll get a workout on this trail compared to other trails of the same length.
This is a trail you want to avoid after heavy rains as it can get slippery.
You’ll likely experience bay breezes since this country area is not too far from the ocean. Located in Monterey County, this bucolic area doesn’t get a ton of traffic so it’s usually not overrun with tourists.
At the top, you’ll experience some incredible views.
Although this area has similar terrain as trails in the Sierra Foothills and some parts of the Sacramento Valley, this oak-tree covered woodland is greener and more lush due to its proximity to the ocean and mild climate. Mixed in with the oak trees, you’ll also see pines and other coastal trees.
After you complete this looped trail, you’ll want to walk to Carmel Valley Village for a meal.
In Carmel Valley Village there are several restaurants and cafes, as well as more than a dozen wineries and tasting rooms. This is a fun place to dine, shop, and explore.
One of our favorite casual restaurants in Carmel Valley Village is Kathy’s Little Kitchen. It’s only a 15 minute walk from the trailhead.
Kathy’s Little Kitchen is a great spot to enjoy a good meal after a hike. The restaurant serves Mexican food in a casual setting. Regular customers at Kathy’s Little Kitchen enjoy the breakfast burritos, tacos, and quesadillas. There is even outdoor seating on the main street where you can people-watch while you eat.
