Southern California attractions come in so many different forms, from grand to miniature, from somber to downright silly, and everything in between. There is a quirky art gallery in Twentynine Palms, CA that is unlike anything you will see elsewhere, and at the center of it all is a glass outhouse – yes, an outhouse.
The Glass Outhouse Art Gallery, located in the middle of nowhere near the desert town of Twentynine Palms opened to the public in 2009 and is one of Southern California’s most unusual attractions.
The gallery is open Tuesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., from September through June, and admission is free.
The actual Art Gallery is a refurbished building where the owner had originally cared for rabbits. Now this multi-room space is a go-to place for artists and photographers from all over California - and even other states - to have their work seen. Just one or two artists are featured at a time, with their works hung in the gallery for one month.
Each month, when new art is brought into the gallery, a grand reception is held with strings of lights, live music, refreshments, and dancing under the stars.

The Glass Outhouse is not just a memorable name for the gallery. Humor meets art meets the call of nature here.
As in ancient palaces, two lion sculptures lead to this very unique “throne.” Yes, the outhouse has glass walls. And yes, it is a real working restroom you can use.

It is no doubt unnerving to answer the call of nature in a glass room, but rest assured, you can see out, but no one can see in.
Reportedly, there were about 100 guests when the Glass Outhouse first opened and everyone wanted to take pictures inside it, but no one would use it except one small child. Visitors use it every day now.
Whether or not you use the facilities, you definitely want to take the time to leisurely wander through this extensive outdoor space with its bottle-lined paths and seemingly endless pieces to discover.
Keep your eye out for the skeleton gym, too, where the desert seems to have been too much for the exercisers.

There is no real theme to the works of art scattered throughout the site, but the creativity and randomness of it all are intriguing, amusing, and downright entertaining.
