Yorktown County was established as one of the original eight shires of Colonial Virginia, founded in 1682. The town was established on the York River as a port for colonists to export tobacco and other goods to Britain.

By 1750, Yorktown had a population of nearly 2,000 along with almost 300 buildings.

Yorktown is perhaps most famous for its role in the Revolutionary War. On October 9th, 1781, General Charles Cornwallis surrendered to General George Washington and the French fleet.

The war would continue on for an additional year; however, the siege and surrender at Yorktown is what effectively ended the war in North America.
