Do you ever wonder what it would be like to live during the Wild West years when South Dakota was a mining mecca and shady (err, colorful) folks made day-to-day life more interesting? These early turbulent days have gone, but you can still get a taste of them via this historic South Dakota bar and restaurant where Wild Bill Hickock died:
Welcome to the aptly-named Wild Bill Bar in Deadwood, where the infamous Buffalo Bill Hickock was killed.
Billed as a folk hero of the American Old West, James "Wild Bill" Butler Hickock made quite the name for himself, thanks, in part, to his untraditional lifestyle and gunslinging ways, which, in 1876, got him shot and killed.
As the story goes, a game of poker at Nuttal & Mann's turned deadly, as the novice Jack McCall did not take his loss well and, after shouting, "Damn you! Take that!", shot Wild Bill in the back of the head with a .45 caliber revolver.
A few years after Hickock's untimely death, the now-tainted saloon burned down, later being rebuilt and re-named Saloon #10 before becoming the present-day Wild Bill Bar.
When you visit today, you will not find "killer" games of poker but rather a bar and restaurant that still features the same type of decor that you would have seen during Wild Bill's time!
In addition to the old-timey ambiance, the Wild Bill Bar also pays homage to the infamous Hickock through pictures and memorabilia, plus a small tribute at the exact spot where he died.
While there, pull up a chair and enjoy your favorite beverage and one of the bar's tasty food options.
To make your trip even more memorable, the Wild Bill Bar is also home to billiards and foosball, an ice cream parlor, and unique shopping.
