Bryce Canyon National Park is an outdoor enthusiast’s ultimate playground. With incredible hiking trails, stunning overlooks, and camping opportunities, this is one of the best places to visit in Utah. And while this national park is delightful to visit all year long, you’ll want to plan your upcoming visit during Utah Prairie Dog Day, the most adorable spring celebration.
Mark your calendars and plan your visit to Bryce Canyon National Park on Thursday, May 11, 2023, to attend Utah Prairie Dog Day. This spring celebration is a day full of activities that the entire family will enjoy.
If you have spent much time outdoors in southern Utah, you’ve likely come across a prairie dog. The Utah Prairie Dog is the Beehive State’s only endemic mammal and Bryce Canyon is the only national park that they call home.
These are social animals that live in large groups, burrow in the ground, and are often seen in short-grass prairie and mountain meadows.

During the summers at Bryce Canyon, you can often see these small animals in meadows along the road. While you may want to stop and admire these animals, do not try to approach them or feed them.
From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 11, stop by the plaza outside of the Bryce Canyon Visitor Center and participate in family-friendly activities including a prairie dog calling contest. There will also be a Utah Prairie Dog viewing table at the edge of the parking lot that you won’t want to miss.
Prior to the event, local students from Garfield, Wayne, and Kane counties can participate in a Utah Prairie Dog art contest. Winners of this contest will also be announced at this event and at 4:30 p.m., step inside the Visitor Center Theater for the keynote speaker's presentation.
Of course, at the end of the day, you’ll want to catch a stunning Bryce Canyon sunset. This is the perfect ending to an adorable spring celebration.
