We can boast about small towns in Maine from east to west and north to south. The fact is many of our state is covered in small towns and they build the backbone of what Maine is all about. There is a tight-knit community in a historic and enchanting town that is so small you might miss it if you didn’t know where to look. While talking to locals usually someone brings up a small town in Maine in the middle of nowhere and chances are you haven’t heard of it before. When you live in a place like this, tiny towns are just the reality of the state. However, when you are willing to explore fascinating little places like Hallowell, Maine, then you might find that it actually feels bigger than you may think.
Hallowell is located right next to our state capitol and is in fact, the smallest city in our state.
People have lived in this hilly river city for generations and the community is very close because of it. The town has survived harsh winters, runaway trains, and floods, but its resilience makes it that much more charming. To get a feel for the town, all you have to do is park your car and take a stroll downtown. Head into the various galleries, shop at the local antique stores, and read the historical signs. One of the best places to find the rich history of this riverfront town is at the Hubbard Free Library.
Along with some shopping and restaurants (more on food later), Hallowell plays host to some stunning natural beauty.
The Rail Trail is a lovely addition that was created by making a paved path that connects Augusta to Gardiner, and it all started in the middle. On the northern part of the city, you will find a trail leading you to our capital city with views of the river, the old railroad system, and more. This trail is fairly easy to traverse and a popular place for people looking to just take a walk. I have traveled along this trail many times and there are lots of interesting and unique things to see along the way. This is a great activity for someone looking to get outside and enjoy some fresh air while enjoying the small-town scenery.

Hallowell is also a great place to kick back and relax. Head on down to the end of downtown to the waterfront.
The deck overlooking the water is a great place to just sit down and watch the peaceful current of the Kennebec River. Stay long enough and you might see the river’s famous sturgeons jump out of the water creating a spectacular show for visitors. This was always one of my favorite pastimes. The calming waters are worth the trip alone but when you see the massive fish leap out of the water with a large splash it can really be an exciting way to spend the evening.

For those seeking natural beauty, we can think of a place no better than Vaughan Woods.
This lovely forest got the nickname Hobbit Land for its enchanting charm. Take a trip to the dam to see the waterfall down the stream below, take the loop trail to immerse yourself in this incredible forest, or take one of the more adventurous trails that lead to some old stone bridges. The options are plentiful and this woodland hike is great any time of the year. I have hiked these woods more times than I can count through every season but there is something magical about this forest in the fall and winter months. When you are looking for something to eat, few places offer food and service as good as The Liberal Cup. This is not just your typical pub; the variety and tastes found in The Liberal Cup are outstanding. I recommend getting the fish and chips or the shepherd's pie because both are simply to die for.

At The Quarry Tab Room, you can also find quite a variety of flavors, but the real star of the show is the setting. On a cold winter day, sit in the geodesic domes for a cozy and intimate dining experience. When the weather warms up, the outdoor area is a happening place to be where you can play cornhole and enjoy live music.
My all-time favorite place to eat in all of Maine is also located in Hallowell. Lucky Garden is simply put the best Chinese food in the state, and possibly the whole state.
I would recommend going for lunch and partaking in the buffet. The prices are reasonable and the service is exemplary. The buffet will also allow you to sample many of the great dishes they make and I can tell you from much experience, there isn't a bad item on the menu.
Park your car and stay awhile by booking a weekend getaway at The Loft at Hallowell. This spacious rental will allow you to be located right downtown where you will be able to freely walk all around town and allow yourself to be fully immersed into the culture of Hallowell.
Hallowell, Maine is a great place to visit with its enchanting charm and historical value. Hallowell is the quintessential Maine river town and is well worth the visit. With a thriving art scene, some incredible food options, river views, and natural beauty found in the woods, this little city deserves a spot on your bucket list.
