Editor’s Note: Unfortunately, after 42 years of outstanding service, Cafe Vermilionville in Lafayette has been permanently closed. But here’s another historic restaurant in Louisiana that we recommend.
When you want to experience a piece of Louisiana’s history, look no further than this historic restaurant in Louisiana. The building that houses Cafe Vermilionville has been many, many different businesses over the years, and it’s like taking a step through time when you walk into the historic restaurant. Let’s take a look:
When you first arrive at Cafe Vermilionville, your first thought is going to be, “am I going into someone’s house?” And you’re not far off!
The restaurant has been open since 1981, but the building is much older. There’s a little bit of a mystery as to the exact dates, but the building was built around 1835 and operated as the Vermilionville Inn for many decades, and was even used as a headquarters and an infirmary for Union troops during the Civil War.
From the moment you step inside, you’ll feel the history of the place.
Ownership swapped hands a few times after the inn closed down, and it wasn’t until the 1950s that someone purchased and converted it into a private residence, which lasted about 10 years. After that, it was an antique shop, a beauty salon, and then a restaurant called Maison Acadienne for a brief moment in time before becoming Lafayette’s first singles bar and grill, Judge Roy Bean’s Saloon.

In 1981, Cafe Vermilionville moved in and it has been a favorite for locals ever since.
The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983 and remains one of Lafayette’s most cherished restaurants for over 40 years.
