Many Michiganders use the cold winter months to hibernate and take a break from outdoor activities. But of all of the fantastic things to do in winter in Michigan indoors, the Great Lakes State also has so many gorgeous parks, lakes, and snowy hikes to choose from that it would be a shame to coop yourself up inside! If you’re ready to embrace the chilly weather, you’ll love taking this winter hike in Bruce Crossing, Michigan.
O Kun-de-kun Falls is a 2.7-mile waterfall trail loop in the Upper Peninsula. While most folks visit Tahquamenon Falls and Miners Falls, you're not likely to run into any fellow hikers on this quiet, woodsy trail.
This hike is considered a moderately difficult route due to its length which takes around an hour to complete. The terrain is relatively flat which makes for an easier journey. But winter adds an extra layer of difficulty... and beauty!
To access this trail you’ll find a parking lot along Highway 45, approximately 8 miles north of Bruce Crossing. This spot is also a trailhead for the North Country Hiking Trail and there are no public restrooms.

During your hike, you’ll encounter an amazing suspension bridge, spot multiple magnificent waterfalls, and see some truly impressive views.
Finally, you'll reach the falls! While the little-known O Kun-de-kun Falls is beautiful in the summer months, it looks completely different and stunning in the winter. You can take the time to appreciate this unique view of the falls while you are surrounded by the quiet solitude of a winter wonderland.
Many hikers will walk the same way they came in, back and forth instead of a loop. If you’re traveling to the Upper Peninsula this winter, definitely add this winter hike and its frozen waterfalls to your list!
