Featuring a 1920s soda fountain, fresh saltwater taffy (with live demonstrations), and more candy and ice cream than you could ever hope to encounter under one roof, this local icon is undeniably worth a visit.
Next time you find yourself strolling around Galveston's historic Strand district, don't even think about leaving without stopping by La King's Confectionary.
Opened in the late 1970s, this blast from the past is a recreation of a traditional early 20th-century confectionary, complete with a working soda fountain, fresh saltwater taffy, and even an old-fashioned penny press.
Whether you prefer homemade peanut butter cups or truffles or something more on the fruity side, rest assured there's something to please every palate.
Make sure to check out the rock candy selection. It's such a fun and unique treat that comes in a variety of delicious flavors. You'll also see gumballs, jawbreakers, jelly beans, and a host of other nostalgic favorites.
If you have dietary restrictions, fear not. Although old-fashioned, La King's is very accommodating. Just look at how many sugar free chocolates are available!
The confectionary also features an ice cream parlor that dishes out Purity brand ice cream - Texas' very first ice cream manufacturer, founded in 1889 right here on Galveston island. How does an old-fashioned banana split sound? Or perhaps you're more of a malt person?
One of the neatest things about La King's is their saltwater taffy demonstration. On weekends and all throughout the summer, you can watch master candy makers pull, spin, and package the nostalgic treat. If you're lucky, you may even get to try a sample!
