Do you have one of those negative people in your life who complains about the “flatness” of “ugly” Kansas? (We all do; you can admit it.) The next time somebody spouts off about something they know nothing of, take them to one of these 11 scenic overlooks that is sure to leave them breathless:
1. Cheyenne Bottoms Scenic Overlook (Great Bend)
What better way to start this list than by talking about the beautiful Cheyenne Bottoms Scenic Overlook, which features over 40,000-acres of lowland marsh. (It's a lot prettier than it sounds...)
2. Santa Fe Trail Tracks (Dodge City)
Historic ruts, high plains, and short grass for as far as the eye can see = heaven.
3. Coronado Heights (Lindsborg)
It should come as a surprise to no one that the view from atop this historic stone castle looks THIS amazing!
4. Schrumpf Hill Overlook (Cottonwood Falls)
There are many things to love about the colorful and gorgeous Flint Hills Scenic Byway, but this award-winning scenic overlook may just be our favorite (for obvious reasons)...
5. Cimarron National Grassland Overlook (Elkhart)
See this stunning "8 Wonders of Kansas" finalist for yourself to fully appreciate these three diverse and dynamic area ecosystems (shortgrass, wooded riparian, and sand-sage prairie).
6. Indian Rock Park (Salina)
When I told my husband that I was working on a scenic overlooks topic, he told me that I must add Indian Rock, which he and his friends used to hike and explore while growing up. (After seeing the area for myself, I can see why it is such a popular place!)
7. K-177 Overlook Park (Manhattan)
Remember the scene in Titanic where Leo stands at the front of the ship and screams, "I'm the king of the world!"? Yeah, this view of the breathtaking Konza Prairie is kind of like that.
8. Jackson Park (Atchison)
Let's just say that you cannot fully appreciate this historic railroad town without seeing it from the hill at Jackson Park! (When you visit, tread with caution; a little birdie tells us that the park is haunted after dark by the ghost of "Molly," who was found hanging from a tree the morning after her senior prom.)
9. Four State Lookout (White Cloud)
See four states at once (Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, and Missouri) from the observation deck of this White Cloud landmark!
10. Red Barn Green Farm (Rantoul)
If you think the picture of this farm, swimming pool, and surrounding area is pretty, just wait until you see it in person...
11. Wells Overlook Park (Lawrence)
I am going to go out on a limb here and say that even K-State fans can agree on the loveliness seen from this beautiful Lawrence park!
