I am somewhat a cliche'. I grew up running around barefoot on a farm in Kentucky.
I love writing, art, sunshine, all animals and my incredibly patient husband, who tolerates my "crazy animal lady" side.
There are some great towns to consider for a summer day trip in Kentucky, and Grand Rivers should be at the top of the list. For starters, this little town of less than 400 residents is bordered by Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley, which both provide glorious opportunities for fishing, boating and relaxing. On top of that, Grand Rivers has acres of Mother Nature’s magic, and some fantastic places to stop in for a meal, if you are not catching your own. You can even spend a weekend at one of the local marinas if you have the time.
Here’s why Grand Rivers makes a perfect summer day trip in Kentucky:
This town offers visitors a trip back in time to a place where you still know your neighbor’s name… and the people come together in emergencies. There are gathering spots where you can hear live music and there is often a local celebration for something, especially nice weather.
This favored marina at 263 Green Turtle Bay Drive has just about anything you could dream of. There are cozy cabins, boat rentals, canoeing, kayaking, primitive camping areas, camping areas with hookups, grills for cooking out and miles of shoreline to explore. You can play golf, or enjoy the beauty and bounty of nature.
You are not just limited to one fishing spot. You can choose between miles of water on Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley, or one of the smaller lakes in the area. All promise to have some good fishing, or at least a serene place to nap while your pole sits in the water.
There are miles of shoreline that offer cool spots to spread out a towel and take a swim. The hot, humid summer weather makes the cool water even more inviting. There are no lifeguards driving around on boats, so make sure and adhere to safety precautions.
Grand Rivers is in the midst of the beautiful Land Between the Lakes State Park. Visitors have miles of Mother Nature to explore, hike and relax in. You can find a cozy little spot and enjoy a picnic under a shady tree. There are also some amazing overlooks that let you see for miles that are well worth the exercise.
This renowned restaurant at 1793 JH O’Bryan Avenue is a must stop and eat spot, even if it is just for dessert. Actually, the desserts are mouthwatering… and homemade with lots of love. Everything you get at this historic little spot will leave you with a desire to visit again soon.
Every town has its local shops, but Grand Rivers has captured the charm and community feel that must have existed among settlers centuries ago. You will find handmade items, delicious baked goods and other useful items to take home. Something made by hand will always hold together better than mass reproductions.
The Lighthouse Landing Marina Sailing School has been recognized for being an outstanding sailing school, and the instructor was also recognized for his teaching skills. This is a must stop if you’d like to rent a sailboat for the afternoon, and let the wind guide your way. It is also a beautiful spot to sit and watch a sunrise or sunset.
This renowned theater is home to a monthly variety show, along with special events and other performances. It offers performances year round in order to provide entertainment to both locals and visitors to the area. You can contact 888-362-4223 for more information and show times.

This little lake is a serene spot that is often overlooked in favor of Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley. It may not be big, but it has beauty, serenity, and a lot of local functions. There is a picnic and pavilion bandstand, complete with a dance area. This is where the Labor Day Arts and Crafts Festival and other events are held annually.
The Jetty is close to the Lighthouse Landing Resort and Marina on Kentucky Lake. Cosmopolitan Magazine deemed it one of the most romantic spots in the country back in 2006, and not a lot has changed. This is the spot for lovers, as the sun or moon glistens off the water, creating a perfect romantic environment to enjoy.
Once you get to know Grand Rivers a little bit, it isn’t surprising that is a perfect spot for summer day trip in Kentucky. Have you ever visited this town? If not, what town do you think would make for a pleasant afternoon?
