Laws in Alaska sometimes cross the line between completely obvious and awkwardly confusing. But hey, we’re just here to write the story because there is no way in the world that we could even attempt to digest the meaning behind some of these laws. From feeding alcohol to moose, carrying slingshots around town and waking bears up to take selfies – these laws are so “Only in Alaska!” If none of them surprise you, then you’re definitely more of a sourdough than us!
1. In Fairbanks it is illegal to feed alcoholic beverages to a moose.
And if you do, you will probably be ran out of the state... SEE YA! There is a special place in the lower 48 for people who don't respect wildlife.
2. Although it is legal to shoot bears (hunting rules and restrictions apply), waking a sleeping bear for the purpose of taking a photograph is prohibited.
And if you ever try this idiotic act, we have a feeling that you'll loose a lot more than just some money paying off a fine. Like say maybe, your life? We'd say the risk is definitely not worth the reward of a sweet selfie.
3. In Haines it is illegal to carry a concealed slingshot without a specific license.
Sorry kids, slingshots are for adults. With concealed carry permits only. Hate to be the Grinch that stole Christmas but you know, a law is a law. Who makes up these things?
4. In Anchorage it is illegal for a person to ride or live in a trailer as it is being hauled across the city.
Hate to cramp your style, but grab your pillow and toothbrush and exit through the any door or window. BEFORE the wheels on the bus go round and round.
5. In Anchorage it is illegal to let your dog ride freely in the back of your truck.
If the animal is cross tethered or in a secure cage, then you should be good. But the law is in place to keep your animal from being objected or thrown from the vehicle. Keep the pooches safe, y'all!
6. It is illegal in Alaska to push a live moose out of a moving airplane.
So if you had "take the pet moose for a skydiving lesson" on your bucket list, you'll just have to make peace with not being able to live out that dream. But really though, if you have a live moose in an airplane... how in the world did this law get written? Just how.
7. In Soldotna, it is illegal to allow attractive nuisances.
If it sounds like an oxymoron, trust us... we agree with that thought. Do you want to help decode this one for us?
8. In Juneau you are not allowed to let a pet of any kind into a salon.
Sorry fido, we'll just have to make you beautiful from the comfort of our own home. Those beauty salons and barber shops weren't ready for your gorgeous locks anyways!
9. It is illegal to view moose from a flying airplane in Alaska.
So if you see your pilot closing his/her eyes and flying blind... now you know why. You just can't make this stuff up!
10. In Anchorage it is illegal to string a piece of wire across any road.
Sorry clowns, these shenanigans will get you slammer real quick.
11. In Nome you are not allowed to roam the city with a bow and arrow on your person.
Well, I guess it might be a little awkward to see a random person walking around town with a bow and arrow. So, okay. This one just "is what it is." We sorta get it.
What are your thoughts on these surprising laws in Alaska? Do you know of any others that would be good to add to the list?
