How often do you come across a forest-themed restaurant? Probably never. And pair that with it being right next to the Eldorado National Forest! You’ve got yourself a forest-themed itinerary.
First, start your day out with a hike. There's nothing like getting outside in nature and moving, and then following that up with a delicious meal. The forest-themed restaurant is in Placerville, but the Eldorado National Forest is a bit further up the highway.
There are plenty of hiking trails in this area. In fact, you could hike a new trail every weekend for the rest of your life and never run out of trails to trek. But since today is forest-themed, let's really get into the thick-of-it without driving too far. Ice House Reservoir Loop fits the bill. The trail is 9.5 miles long and takes an average of 3 hours to complete.
The trail goes around the reservoir and at times disappears and hikers might need to climb over small rocks (nothing you need equipment to do), or walk through the sandy beach area. If it's snowing, you'll have a better time if you wear snowshoes.
The trail is open year-round but Ice House Road may be closed if it is inaccessible due to snow. Check the weather conditions before you go.
Once you've made the loop, and you're ready for a forest-themed dining experience, it's a 45 minute drive straight down Highway 50 to get to Placerville.
The Enchanted Forest Dining Experience in downtown Placerville is one you'll never forget!
They nailed the Celtic fairies-in-a-forest vibe, and the food selection is good, too.
For appetizers, they offer prosciutto-wrapped asparagus, baked brie, salad, and more. The main course menu theme could be described as steakhouse classics with a Celtic touch. Items like the classic Filet Mignon and braised short ribs, plus Cornish pastry pie round out the full menu.
There is also a wide selection of crepes, including gluten free and vegan options.
If you're in the mood for something rich and decadent, they serve cheese fondue for two. They can also serve vegan cheese fondue, which is a pretty rare offering at a restaurant. Nice touch! If you're still hungry, there is a dessert menu. Wash all that good food down with one of the 30 beers on tap.
Occasionally the restaurant hosts special events. Check out their website to see upcoming shows and events.
