West Virginia has incredible beauty, no only in its nature but in some of the man-made things, too. Here are some of the state’s most interesting bridges.
1. Frank Gatski Memorial Bridge in Huntington
Also called the East Huntington Bridge and the 31st Street Bridge, this bridge crosses the Ohio River.
2. The Philippi Covered Bridge
Built in 1852 by Lemuel Chenoweth, this covered bridge is a local landmark and historical icon. It's the oldest and longest covered bridge in West Virginia.
3. The New River Gorge Bridge in Fayetteville
Formerly the world's longest steel single-span arch bridge, the New River Gorge Bridge is one of the most photographed sights in West Virginia.
4. The Avis Bridge in Hinton
This old bridge in Hinton used to carry W.Va. 107 over the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad.
5. The Locust Creek Covered Bridge in Pocahontas County
The county's only last covered bridge, according to Wikipedia. It's located about 6 miles outside of Hillsboro.
6. The Wheeling Suspension Bridge
This bridge spans the Ohio River in Wheeling. At one point, for about 2 years, it was the largest suspension bridge in the world.
7. Barrackville Covered Bridge
This single span crosses Buffalo Creek near Barrackville. It was built in 1853 by Lemuel Chenoweth.
8. The Veterans Memorial Bridge in Weirton
Also known as the New Steubenville Bridge, it connects Weirton W.Va. with Stuebenville, Ohio.
9. Dents Run Covered Bridge in Monongalia County
Located near Laurel Point, this bridge was built in 1889. It measures 12 feet wide and 40 feet long.
10. The Blennerhassett Island Bridge
Crosses the Ohio River between Belpre, Ohio and Parkersburg, West Virginia. It opened to traffic in 2008.
