Don’t you just love it when you can take a drive and NOT have to rely on a GPS? This rarely happens, as nearly every route has twists and turns, which is why we love long roads like beautiful Interstate 90 in South Dakota that practically run through the entire state. This is why this stretch of highway is one of our favorite scenic drives in South Dakota.
Beginning in Seattle, Washington, and meandering a whopping 3,021 miles to Boston, Massachusetts, Interstate 90 is a unique road that passes through such landscapes as the Pacific Northwest, mountains, northeast, and, of course, the Great Plains of South Dakota.
But of course, we're concerned with the stretch of the interstate in South Dakota.
Running along 415 miles of lower-to-mid SoDak, I-90 showcases many of the scenes that make the Mount Rushmore State so unique, including the Black Hills, the Missouri River, and the prairie.
When it comes to charming small towns, there is no better South Dakota road than I-90, which runs past such communities as Mitchell, Spearfish, Wall, and Sturgis.
In addition to these (and many more!) towns, I-90 also boasts close proximity to some of South Dakota's most revered landmarks, a la Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, and the Needles Highway.
Don't forget to also shop and eat during your trip, as there are plenty of one-of-a-kind boutiques and delicious mom-and-pop restaurants along the way!
You’ll also want to make sure you’ve packed all the road trip essentials before you head out on any of the many scenic drives in South Dakota. And, although you don’t need a GPS for this drive, you’ll definitely want to download the AllTrails Plus app to your smart device for all the amazing hikes you’ll encounter along the way.
