If you want to visit an eerie place in Montana , be sure to check out the old Dumas Brothel In Montana. It has a fascinating history, dating back to 1890. And it even hosts ghost hunts periodically! Learn more, and then check it out.
You will find the remains of the Dumas Brothel in historic Uptown Butte, along Mercury Street.
Once known as Butte’s red-light district, this brothel operated from 1890 to 1982. The site was designed as both a brothel and a parlor house where copper miners and professional men would visit.
Originally, prostitution was only permitted on the second floor of the brothel.
Eventually, with the opening of the basement in the mid-1910s and with the expansion of the main floor, all three levels were put to use.
Mining was king at the time, and there were even tunnels leading from most of the mining areas directly to the basement.
A hierarchy developed, with miners frequenting the basement, middle-class visitors using the main floor, and the second floor visited by the wealthiest members of Butte society.
The basement operated until 1943 when it was completely closed off and the tunnels sealed.
Most of the furnishings in the basement are from the World War II era, or even earlier.
Because the second floor was for high-class clientele, those rooms were more lavishly decorated.
Rumor has it that some of the former women working in the brothel are still haunting the building.
The site now hosts small ghost-hunting events for those who love paranormal activities. For those who are more interested in history and less interested in ghosts, the Dumas Brothel also offers guided tours of the site.
