The 1950s and 1960s were all about drive-ins; this type of restaurant was featured in movies and TV shows all the time. Since then, drive-thrus have edged them out and nowadays it’s challenging to find an old school drive-in restaurant. However, several great ones remain in business in New Mexico. So next time you’re feeling nostalgic, cruise over to one of these eight restaurants.
8. Comet II Drive In & Restaurant, 217 Historic Route 66, Santa Rosa
Comet II comes in at number eight because, while it used to be a drive-in restaurant, that is no longer the case. But you'll still get a sense of nostalgia along with your chimichangas.
7. Foxy Drive-In, 720 W 7th Street, Clovis
Foxy Drive-In is a family business that's been in operation since 1956 and is something of an institution in Clovis. This retro joint has the standard burgers, fountain drinks, and banana splits (pictured) that you'd expect, along with Mexican dishes as well.
6. Stop & Eat Drive-In,
110 S Paseo De Onate,
Espanola
This drive-in certainly looks like it's been around since the 1950s, but don't be deterred by the exterior! Sure, it's barebones - you order at the counter then retire to your car - but the burgers and chile, in particular, are memorable.
5. Becky's Drive-in, 901 W Church Street, Carlsbad
Want the full drive-in experience? Then head to Becky's where you'll be served by an actual car hop who hooks a tray up to the window of your vehicle. Don't leave without ordering the corn dogs.
4. Circle T Drive-In, 625 E Reinken Avenue, Belen
Next time you're hankering for a killer green chile cheeseburger, pull in to Circle T. Bonus: they serve fried ice cream!
3. Hi-D-Ho Drive In, 414 S White Sands Boulevard, Alamogordo
Whether you opt for a tiger burger (try adding pineapple on top) or just stop by for a shake or freshly squeezed cherry lime, this drive-in will transport you to the 1950s.
2. A & B Drive In, 211 N Broadway Street, Truth or Consequences
A&B Drive-In can satisfy any GCCB craving. They also serve delicious enchiladas.
1. Dog House Drive In, 1216 Central Avenue SW, Albuquerque
This joint feels super retro - they don't even accept plastic. The Dog House is infamous for its chili dogs which provide a nostril-searing level of heat that locals adore. Try one if you dare! Otherwise, stick to one of the juicy burgers.
Have you been to any of these restaurants? Do you wish the drive-in would make a comeback or are you happy to leave it in the past?
