The town of Londonderry in New Hampshire is full of rich history, dating back to 1718. This charming town is named after the city in Ireland where most of the early immigrants had migrated from.
Londonderry was once referred to as "Nutfield" because of the dense nut trees surrounding the area. While the area may be now mostly known for its apple orchards, the town has many claims of fame.
One of those many claims to fame is General John Stark.
He was born in Londonderry, New Hampshire, and became widely known for his time as a Major General in Continental Army during the American Revolution. New Hampshire’s official state motto "Live Free or Die" was written by Stark on July 31, 1809.

Londonderry was also once home to Matthew Thornton, the signer of the Declaration of Independence.
There are four villages that make up the small town: Hillsborough Bridge Village, Hillsborough Center, Hillsborough Upper Village, and Hillsborough Lower Village.
This quiet, rural town has approximately 6,000 residents and is home to a few prominent historic landmarks.
Most notable is the Franklin Pierce Homestead, home to the fourteenth President of the United States, Franklin Pierce. He was born in 1804 and raised in the Pierce homestead in Hillsborough until he went off to attend Bowdoin College.
After college, he returned back to Hillsborough and served as Town Moderator. He then later served as its State Representative, which eventually led to his Presidency.
