Spending time outdoors in Georgia is one of the most sought after experiences for both residents and visitors alike. There are so many different things to do, whether it’s in nature, or simply walking the streets of Historic Savannah. With summer right around the corner, now is the time to be venturing out into our great state more often. So, we decided to come up with a few outdoorsy things in Georgia that anyone can do.
1. Canoe or kayak down The Altamaha River
Did you know that The Altamaha River has been compared to The Nile? It pumps 100,000 gallons of fresh water into the sea every second. Canoe down this ecological wonder and enjoy each bout of wildlife you encounter.
2. Stroll through Gibbs Garden
More than 220 acres....16 different garden styles...and a tons of enchanting flora and fauna. Gibbs Garden is a great place to walk, admire, and reflect on what Georgia nature is all about.
3. Float down The Chattahoochee River
Spend a few hours floating down the river with your closest friends and a cooler of drinks. Either you can buy your own tube and float on, or go through a company which may charge $20-30. Relax, unwind, and let the river carry you to good times.
4. Bike Georgia’s Antebellum Trail
While the entire trail may be a bit lengthy for most, you can still bike as long as you'd like and see some amazing architecture. Antebellum is a style that has lasted throughout the years and deserves to be admired and photographed.
5. Adventure through Chehaw Park
Chehaw Park in Albany, Georgia is a fun place to take the whole family. Not only are there more than 700 acres of pure enjoyment, there are also more than 100 acres of the Wild Animal Park. Ride the train, pet some animals, and catch a colorful performance.
6. Catch a sunset at Brasstown Bald
Brasstown Bald is one of the top hiking spots in the entire state. It's the perfect place to see for miles, as well as take in some of the most splendid sunsets Georgia has to offer.
7. Observe the Atlantic Balloon Race & Festival
Happening next weekend, June 2nd-4th of this year, the Atlantic Balloon Race and Festival in Helen, Georgia is in full effect. It’s the South’s oldest balloon event, and the perfect opportunity to see nearly 30 colorful, bright hot air balloons take flight at once.
8. Pick your own fruit at Mercier Orchards
Located in Blue Ridge, Georgia, Mercier Orchards has been deemed the #1 Apple Orchard in North Georgia. Pick some fruit, buy a handmade pie, or sip on their hard cider. There's something for everyone here.
9. Have a picnic under the Big Oak
In Thomasville, Georgia, sits one of the biggest, and oldest Oak trees in the country. Pack a picnic, sit under the tree, and marvel at the thick branches that envelope the area around you.
10. Feel the fresh mist at Amicalola Falls State Park
Ever wonder what the tallest cascading waterfall in the Southeast looks like? Then look no further because Amicalola Falls is the answer. Located between Ellijay and Dahlonega in Dawsonville, visitors can hike through the park, as well as stand under the falls and observe nature's beauty.
11. Feed the goats with the family
Goats on the Roof is the name, and feeding goats is their game. This is a perfect stop for the entire family, with so many unique wonders and attractions. Feed the goats, mine some gems. and even snack on their Nitro ice cream!
12. Ride bikes along Augusta Riverwalk
For a more peaceful and pleasant day, grab your bikes (or rent them locally) and ride down Riverwalk Augusta. This is the perfect way to get some fresh air and exercise, without having to go too far.
13. Catch the fireworks show at Stone Mountain State Park
Stone Mountain State Park has an insane Lasershow Spectacular nearly every night this summer. Not only is the laser show mesmerizing, but they also have fire-throwing canons and fireworks to top it off. Bring a blanket and sit back and enjoy.
14. Ride the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway
Feel like taking a scenic train trip this summer? Blue Ridge Scenic Railway features a 4-hour, 26-mile trip along the beautiful Toccoa River, ending up in McCaysville. Here, you'll have a 2-hour layover, where you can shop, grab a bite to eat, or stretch your legs.
15. Spend the night in a yurt at Tugaloo State Park
