As the sun goes down and darkness covers everything like a thick blanket, the world no longer feels familiar. There is something eerie about the stillness and quiet of long-forgotten places. When you hear stories of a horrid past then your eyes may start playing tricks on you. Is it all a story or are there hints of something more sinister going on? These questions seem to rise when we hear the legends and ghost stories of abandoned areas. Do they hold any truth? We have not just one, but two abandoned tunnels in Tennessee that come with a downright terrifying legend.
The Sensabaugh Tunnel was built by Edward Sensabaugh in the 1920s. But as time went on and urban legends started to take shape a few things got lost over time.
The name was attached to a drive through tunnel off of Sensabaugh Hollow Road. However, The original tunnel sits off of the Big Elm Road to the south. This tunnel has been called the Big Elm Tunnel or the Click Tunnel. Long forgotten and in a state of disarray, the tunnel is no longer passable with a vehicle but sits vacant on the side of a narrow road.
There are no pull-offs anywhere near and the locals do not like you stopping and blocking the road, so see it as you drive by and make sure not to block the already narrow road.
You can visit this spot even today but only if you dare. Both tunnels when visited had many people leaving very unsettled by their terrifying experience.
Edward Sensabaugh did not want them hanging out so he would hide on the other side of the cave creating shrieking cries to scare off the unwelcome loiters. Then the legends of the haunted tunnels began.
Many claim to still hear ghostly wails throughout the tunnel halls.
Some even claim that when you enter the tunnel and turn off your car then it will not start again. Still, others will hear footsteps or see chilling images of ghosts hanging around. More and more tales of horror come out of these long lost underpasses.
It is up to you what and what you believe about this haunting location. Will you go and visit these eerie abandoned tunnels in Tennessee or are you happy to stay far clear of them?
