Take a day to explore New Jersey’s Pine Barrens! The Pinelands National Preserve is one of the largest tracks of forest between New York and Washington, D.C., and it’s worth visiting the various towns and parks that make this historic and beautiful place one of the Garden State’s treasures.
Double Trouble was once a company town in the heart of the New Jersey Pinelands. Today, it's a historic village and state park where New Jersey nature lovers can explore the pines.
The "Double Trouble Company" got its start in the early 1900s when it was founded to sell timber and cranberries in this New Jersey town. Cedar Creek provided a great location for both sawmills and cranberry production, and the town and thus the company got its name after troublesome muskrats broke through a dam on the river.
The town's location was ideal for cranberry production, and it was one of the places that put the Pine Barrens on the map. Soon, New Jersey was famous throughout the country for producing top-notch cranberries.
Visitors today can step back in time to see what Double Trouble was like in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Along with bogs and miles of trails, 14 historic buildings have been restored and protected. You can see the schoolhouse, homes, a general store, cranberry production houses, and a sawmill.
