There aren’t a lot of things more terrifying than earth opening up and looking into an unknown abyss. Oklahoma is no stranger to sinkholes and has seen more in the recent years due to flooding. Whether you find them terrifying or intriguing, here are 5 infamous sinkholes the Sooner State has experienced in recent years.

1. Delhi, 2011

In 2011, this sinkhole appeared overnight and formed a hole 40 ft. wide by 40 ft. deep…large enough to fit a small house inside of it. Was it coincidence that it happened two days after a 5.6 magnitude earthquake in the state?

2. Weatherford, 2015

This building in Weatherford was about to be swallowed up by this giant sinkhole caused by recent flooding.

3. Oklahoma City Metro, 2013

This sinkhole made the news worldwide after flooding and a tornado outbreak in the Oklahoma City metro area.

4. Oklahoma City, 2013

Two women were in a car when it fell into a sinkhole in Oklahoma City. The sinkhole was caused by a nearby water line break.

Mining for zinc and lead under and around Picher, have caused sinkholes to appear overnight, due to mining shafts collapsing. This sinkhole has been listed numerous times on "Famous Sinkhole" lists.
