The Blue Mountain via Pinhoti Trail is a popular section of this epic trail, and it's known for attracting hikers from near and far.
The distance of the Blue Mountain via Pinhoti Trail is a little more than six miles out and back. In certain spots it has rocky terrain, which is why this part of the Pinhoti Trail is moderately challenging.
In addition to rocky terrain, you'll also experience some pretty incredible views, which isn't surprising since you're at the top of Cheaha Mountain, Alabama's highest natural point.
At marker 2.1 of this trail section, you’ll arrive at Blue Mountain Shelter, which was built in 1983 and is currently used as a place for hikers to spend the night after an exhausting day of hiking. Over the years, Blue Mountain Shelter has earned a spooky reputation because of what several hikers have experienced.

Inside the 3-sided shelter, the phrase "There are shadow people here!" has been written. This makes a lot of sense considering many people have reported seeing shadowy figures. Strange scratching noises have also been reported. Following reports, investigators found no animals near the shelter, so could it in fact be haunted? I guess you'll have to hike this section of the Pinhoti Trail and see for yourself.
Have you ever hiked to the Pinhoti Trail’s Blue Mountain Shelter? If so, did you have a haunting experience? Let us know in the comments below.
