British settlers named the state of New York after York in England. Now, you can time travel to merry old England at the Olde English Pub in Albany, New York. Tons of British culinary favorites can be found here, including fish and chips, shepherd’s pie, bangers and mash, sausage rolls, Scotch eggs, and so much more to fly your taste buds across the sea and straight into a proper British pub. A wide array of England’s best ales and ciders are available to wash it all down.
The entrance is adorned with the Union Jack flag as well as the traditional St. George's Cross flag. Patio seating is adjacent to a London telephone booth. The red brick construction is reminiscent of a proper public house, from which the term "pub" originates.
The gorgeous back patio has two lush wisteria trees as well as an herb garden to provide fresh flavor to many dishes. The patio is designed as a lovely English garden.
The fish and chips are a staple that nearly everyone loves. North Atlantic beer-battered cod with pub chips, coleslaw, tartar sauce, and a slice of lemon. For an added bit of authenticity, add a side of mushy English peas.
If you've never tried a Scotch Egg, it may become your new favorite. It's a hard-boiled egg wrapped in savory sausage and deep fried, served with pub mustard.
The Olde English Pub is in The Quackenbush House, which was built in 1736 and housed the Dutch Quackenbush Family for more than 200 years. It has been through many phases over the years and was set to be demolished, but the citizens of Albany banded together to save it. This charming pub was set up in 2010 by Mark Graydon, who missed the pubs of England from which he came. It’s been a local favorite ever since. It gets especially festive and decorated around Christmastime. When visiting Albany, be sure to go on one of the historic Trolley Tours and see buildings dating back to the 1600s.
