Did you know that Washington’s own Yakima Valley is responsible for growing more than 75 percent of America’s hops? Needless to say, this leads to the production of some seriously delicious beer, most of which can be enjoyed right here in Washington.
Over the last decade, the Yakima Valley’s craft beer scene has exploded in the best way. And since scrumptious tacos are the perfect thing to enjoy with good beer, we created a beer and taco trail that will knock your socks off. Please remember to designate a sober driver (preferably one that takes payment in tacos), because we’re about to send you on quite a journey.
1. Essencia Artisan Bakery
Essencia Artisan Bakery, 4 N 3rd St, Yakima, WA 98901, USA
Before you begin, it's best to start your morning with a delicious breakfast.... and that's where Essencia Artisan Bakery comes in. Located in the heart of downtown Yakima, this place is a beloved local treasure.
Order a coffee or espresso beverage and choose from an array of tempting pastries, many of which are made from local, seasonal ingredients. You can never go wrong with a chocolate croissant or a tart.
2. Schab's Bier Den
Schab's Bier Den, North 2nd Street, Yakima, WA, USA
Schab's Bier Den has something for every kind of beer drinker, not to mention a great collection of wines and ciders.
This spot was "pandemic born and raised," meaning the team has had to overcome a lot of challenges since their opening about two years ago. But thanks to their bottle and can collection, they've been doing just fine. Schab's also sells tasty small bites, in case you didn't fill up entirely on pastries.
3. Varietal Beer Company
Varietal Beer Company, East Edison Avenue, Sunnyside, WA, USA
Varietal Beer Company was originally imagined as an experimental brewery project. But with the assistance of the Port of Sunnyside, the project expanded to include a full brewery, taproom and barrel program.
Deciding what to order here is no easy task. But in the summer, the beer slushees are always a safe bet. Vesper Songs IPA is also a popular pick.
4. Javi's Chicken and Churros
Javi’s Chicken and Churros #2, East Edison Avenue, Sunnyside, WA, USA
When hunger strikes, head up the street from Varietal and enjoy lunch at Javi's Chicken and Churro's in Sunnyside.
This Javi's location opened in 2021, joining the one in the nearby Grandview. Javier Gonzalez and his family decorated the sleek, modern, inviting restaurant interior. As for the tacos, they're absolutely spectacular, especially the birria.
5. Wandering Hop: Wanderland
Wandering Hop: Wanderland, 260 N Bonair Rd, Zillah, WA 98953, USA
This brewery is located right in the middle of wine country, surrounded by peaceful vineyards.
Founder Nathan Cooper launched Wandering Hop Brewery in 2017 and opened this second location right before COVID-19 hit the U.S. The downtime during the lockdown gave him plenty of time to perfect this beautiful space, which is perfect for kicking back and enjoying a cold one with friends. The beer is inspired by the family's travel and experiences with friends, and the menu has something for everyone. Wandering Hop is also available for private events.
6. Bale Breaker Brewing
Bale Breaker Brewing Company, 1801 Birchfield Rd, Yakima, WA 98901, USA
It wouldn't be a proper beer and taco trail without a stop at Bale Breaker Brewing, a local favorite since 2013.
Bale Breaker is a family owned and operated brewery, and one of the largest independent craft breweries in the state. It's worth stopping by the taproom just to see if there's an event and sampling something in the massive outdoor space.
7. JJ's Birria
JJ's Birria, 1410 S 3rd Ave, Yakima, WA 98902, USA
With locations in Wapato and downtown Yakima, JJ's Birria and Antojitos is the perfect place to stop when it's time to fuel up with more tacos.
Obviously, the focus her is on birria, a stew made from a blend of chili pepper-based goat meat adobo, garlic, cumin, bay leaves, and thyme — but this place sells all kinds of tasty goodness. The birria ramen is delicious, but in our opinion, nothing tops the tacos.
8. The Tap
The Tap, 105 S 1st St #106, Yakima, WA 98901, USA
The Tap is a unique concept. This 50-tap self-pour taproom in downtown Yakima offers a large selection of local craft beer, wine, and ciders. You serve yourself, and you're charged by the ounce as you leave.
The Tap is the perfect spot to end our beer and taco trail because you can have as much or as little as you'd like. Sample a variety of local libations, or simply opt for a small taste to end your evening.
Have you ever spent time at a brewery in the Yakima Valley? Which one is your favorite?
