Covered bridges are an integral part of our nation’s history. Sadly, only a few remain. Originally, the U.S. had over 14,000 covered bridges, and today less than 900 still stand. Pennsylvania leads the country as the state with the most covered bridges. (There are 197 covered bridges in Pennsylvania!) These precious architectural artifacts are not only historic, but they comprise some of the most charmingly beautiful sights in Pennsylvania. It’s true – and just to prove it, we put together some photos of the whimsical Pennsylvania covered bridges. (A special thanks goes to photographer Doug Kerr, whose beautiful work made much of this possible.)

There are lots of options for fun day trips in Pennsylvania. One place worth checking out is:

  • Ricketts Glen State Park.
    • Located in Benton, this is one of the state’s most treasured natural areas and has even earned distinction as a National Natural Landmark.

Covered bridges aren’t the only beautiful sights in Pennsylvania. There are lots of others including:

  • Bushkill Falls in Poconos.
    • A collection of eight cascading waterfalls, it’s been dubbed the Niagara Falls of Pennsylvania and is, not surprisingly, one of the state’s most famous scenic attractions.
    • The falls, which require an admission to view, can be accessed via a network of hiking trails and bridges.
    • Tickets to the waterfalls can be purchased on-site or you can buy them online and “skip the line” when you arrive at Bushkill Falls.
