When you think of popular food in Mississippi, the slugburger undoubtedly comes to mind – and that’s how it should be! It was invented in Corinth, Mississippi, after all. The city isn’t going to let people forget where the famed burger hails from, either. In addition to an annual festival held in its honor, Corinth is home to several restaurants that are famous for their versions of the iconic burger, including the Slugburger Café.

The burger's most distinguishing feature is its fried patty, which is made of beef and some other starchy filler.
A long time favorite, the unique burgers were invented in Corinth back in 1917 by resident John Weeks.

To set his burgers apart from others, Weeks added an unusual ingredient to his patties, and no, it wasn’t slugs. It was potato flour.
Weeks originally dubbed his creation the Weeksburger. His creation was a hit, but the name wasn’t and was eventually changed to slugburger.

The name change seems odd but makes sense when you learn "slug" used to be slang for a nickel, which was the price of the burgers around the time of the Great Depression, when the name change came about.
Today, the burgers are as popular as ever in Corinth. The city actually hosts an annual festival to celebrate the iconic culinary creation.
