The South Carolina Sandhills swipe through the central part of the state in a diagonal fashion moving south from east to west. It’s a geologic wonder that all this sand is sitting in a path that virtually follows the coastline – but at least a hundred miles inland in some places. Geologists believe the sand was moved here by wind during the last glaciation about 75,000 to 6,000 years ago. It’s truly a sight to see and one place to get a good feel for life in the Sandhills is Cheraw State Park in Cheraw.
Visit Cheraw State Park on the web to learn more or making lodging reservations. This trip to the South Carolina Sandhills is sure to be one you won’t soon forget.
While you’re in Cheraw, be sure to visit Dizzy Gillespie Park, named for the town’s most famous birthright claim to fame.
