Looking for a little weekend getaway that’s not too far away? Take this road trip through four of the most charming small towns in Southern California. There’s something for everyone on this trip, from pies to casinos. Check out this map for detailed directions. Highway 78 changes its name a couple of times, but all these towns are right along the way. Have a blast!
1. Ramona
Start your trip in the small town of Ramona. Ramona is located just outside San Diego, but it has its own personality and charm. The sweet shops and restaurants are lots of fun to explore, and because it’s not too far outside the city, it’s an easy day trip for locals. There are farms where you can get delicious fresh local eggs, fruit, and other locally grown foods. As you make your way through the town, enjoy gazing out at wide-open spaces, something that you see much less of when you’re in San Diego.
2. Julian
Drive just a short half hour away to a little place that defines small town charm. Julian is one of the most charming towns in Southern California, and is known for its incredible pies. Regional residents come from hours away for these tasty desserts. They are all made with local berries, apples, and more fruits, all of which you can pick yourself in this haven of a town. You can enjoy wine tasting or cider tasting, dine at cafes that are just bursting with cuteness, and shop in unique local stores. Julian is also a fantastic place to go if you’re looking for outdoor adventure. The Cuyamaca Mountains make for an amazing hike with views to die for! You can also go to the nearby lake for some beautiful scenery. Stay overnight at one of the sweet local inns, like the
Julian Gold Rush Hotel.
3. Alpine
When you wake up in the morning, head to the town of Alpine. It is an especially exciting destination, with fun and upscale casinos like Sycuan and Viejas. Enjoy luxury dining and try your luck at the tables if you’re so inclined. If gambling is not for you, that’s no problem. You can go to the pool instead! If you’re more into exploring the local nature, Cleveland National Forest is right nearby, so you can take a beautiful hike in this pristine area and take in the gorgeous sights.
