Note: due to new restrictions, you will need to have a day-use ticket in addition to a normal entrance fee in order to visit Old Rag Mountain. Only 800 tickets are available daily.

If you're looking for an entire day of hiking through Shenandoah National Park, it doesn't get much better than Old Rag Mountain. Measuring 3,284 feet above sea level, it's one of the most popular peaks in the park.

Climbing to the top, however, is no easy feat. Hikers must prepare both physically and emotionally for a grueling nine-mile hike, marked by rock scrambles and tough inclines.

And while it's among the most challenging hikes in Virginia, the trail is also surrounded by natural wonders. Along the way, you'll be dazzled by old-growth forests, babbling brooks, wildflowers, and a healthy dose of fresh mountain air.

Approaching the summit, you'll come across another significant landmark: a natural stairway climb.
