Feel as though you’re standing on top of the world when you make it to the top of Jack’s Mountain, arguably the highlight of the Thousand Steps Trail in Pennsylvania. A short part of the 84-mile Standing Stone Trail, the picturesque trail offers a glimpse into early Pennsylvania life and boasts some of the best views in the state. If you’re up for somewhat of a challenge, you’ve just found it.
Although the Thousand Steps Trail in Mapleton tallies just over three miles roundtrip, it packs a lot of scenic beauty and is quite the workout.
While the trail is considered moderate, it really depends on you. You'll have to climb 1,000 stairs then turn around and walk back down after you've admired the views at the top.
If you're up for the challenge, wear sturdy hiking shoes, and bring plenty of water. Make sure you have a flashlight, too, just in case it gets dark before you start the journey back down.
You can hike the trail in any season and will probably want to try it in each season. However, take precautions if you're hiking after it rains (the steps can get slippery) or if it's icy in the winter. (Hikers recommend spikes.)
