Alabama's Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge is located in Decatur along the beautiful Tennessee River.
Established in 1938, this wildlife refuge covers approximately 35,000 acres, making it the largest wildlife refuge in Alabama. Because of this, it's one of the largest in the U.S. The refuge also happens to be one of the South’s largest educational centers to study waterfowl and wildlife.
The Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge is home to over 295 bird species during migratory season. If you're ever able to see all of these birds up close, it's truly an experience.
Among these species of birds are waterfowl, sandhill cranes, and whooping cranes. You might even see other types of wildlife during your visit, including deer, alligators, etc.
In addition to viewing birds, visitors have opportunities to participate in a variety of other fun activities, including hiking, biking, horseback riding, etc.
