There’s so much beauty in Northeast Ohio, particularly when it comes to our natural features. With lakes, rivers, and streams, there are plenty of places where you can soak up some sun surrounded by birdsong… and then hike through the surrounding wilderness for added adventure. These three lovely lakefront beaches in Greater Cleveland are surrounded by fun, and you can make a whole weekend out of visiting them. Just don’t forget the sunscreen!
1. Hinckley Lake Spillway Swim Area
Hinckley Spillway, 1824 Metropolitan Park W, Hinckley, OH 44233, USA
As the southernmost reservation in the Cleveland Metroparks, Hinckley Reservation is often overlooked by many Clevelanders. However, this beautiful landscape with a gorgeous 100-acre lake shouldn't be passed up. The Spillway area is super family-friendly, and many enjoy stretching out along its sandy shore... or splashing around in its waters! Remember, however, that local wildlife loves this water, too. You might spot crayfish, salamanders, and waterfowl during your visit.
2. Buzzard Cove Pizzeria
Buzzard Cove Pizzeria, 1053 Bellus Rd, Hinckley, OH 44233, USA
After you enjoy some fun in the sun, treat yourself to some indulgent pizza and ice cream at Buzzard Cove Pizzeria. This teeny-tiny pizza joint is located near the mouth of Hinckley Reservation on Bellus Road, so it's the perfect spot to chill out and fuel up for a few. After you dig into your meal, you might want to play some mini-golf or swing by the driving range. This beloved small-town icon has been around since 1989, and it's the perfect place for the whole family to cool down, clean up, and prepare for the next phase of your journey: hiking!
3. Whipp's Ledges
Whipps Ledges, Hinckley Lake Loop Trail, Hinckley, OH 44233, USA
Once you're re-energized, head back into Hinckley Reservation and get ready for exploration.
Whipp's Ledges is a cool hiking spot that visitors of all ages can appreciate... as long as they can make it up its trails, as they are a bit more challenging due to the steep elevation. At this cool hiking spot, Sharon Conglomerate ledges and historic etchings greet visitors. This rock is a remnant from Ohio's days as an ancient ocean, and its sandy texture and honeycomb weathering patterns will fascinate little hikers.
4. Worden's Ledges
Worden's Ledges, Wordens Ledges Loop Trail, Hinckley, OH 44233, USA
If you're not too tired after your visit to Whipp's Ledges, you have to visit its sister site across the reservation.
Worden's Ledges has a similar layout, but its trails aren't quite as steep... and they're lined with incredible artwork. Gorgeous historic carvings (including a sphinx, a pirate ship, a cross and book, and more) await visitors in an emerald forest. Hiram Worden, the original owner of the property, manufactured chisels and often tested his products on the sandstone ledges behind his house. However, the majority of the carvings come from his artistic son-in-law, Noble Stuart. You'll love discovering the variety of carvings hidden in this portion of Hinckley Reservation.
