New Hampshire is a natural beauty. There’s no doubt about it. She’s smart, too, and has quite the vivacious personality; we can’t help stopping to admire her incredible fall colors, dreamy waterfalls, and stunning mountaintops throughout the seasons. No matter where you go or from which vantage point you view it, the Granite State is something truly special! But there’s no need to backpack through the White Mountains or trudge through miles and miles of backcountry to get a taste of the great outdoors. Fortunately, the gorgeous, historic town of Merrimack, NH is chock full of quiet nature trails that showcase our state’s diverse scenery!
Nearly 600 acres of old logging road trails, wetlands, and the gentle inclines of Horse and Blodgett Hill create a perfect escape into nature that the whole family can enjoy. The main loop trail is the longest of the 11 official trails at just under five miles. You can easily tackle the loop on its own or add on side trails for more of a challenge. Be sure to dig into the trail markers as you go - there's some fascinating history here!
This popular escape is perhaps most known for the small, but pretty, views of Wildcat Falls. But there's much more to see here, even just from the main Falls Loop! Low shrubbery creates an ideal habitat for birds, and the lovely sights and sounds of the Souhegan River can be heard echoing through the towering hardwood trees that line the trail and water. This is an excellent area to explore no matter the season, but fall is a little extra special!
Nearly 500 acres of dense woods, over a dozen trails, serene beaver ponds, vernal pools, babbling streams, and more make up the Grater Woods in Merrimack. The Gateway Trail is the primary trail that connects to the majority of the other paths, which means you can truly create your own adventure here! Keep an eye (and keen ear) out for wildlife - this is an animal corridor and many species make their homes here.
This short and sweet loop is under two miles and will take you through a variety of scenic habitats, along pond waters, and through some incredible colors throughout the seasons - from vibrant autumn leaves to seas of wildflowers in spring. Bonus: you'll likely have the trail to yourself!
At least seven trails wind through this sweet and unexpected park. The Arthur Gordon Trail is a classic and can be easily combined with the other trails in the park. Here, thick forests of Hemlock and Witchhazel create a cool, lush canopy to stroll through. The park was named for the two bridges that can be used to cross Baboosic Brook, and each trail finds its way alongside the water before finally ending at a small pond. With playgrounds and special events happening just steps away, this is an easy nature hike for families that still feels serene and far from the crowds.
Truth be told, there is no shortage of pretty nature trails in New Hampshire, and Merrimack is full of plenty more! We’d love to hear some of your favorite trails, ponds, loops, and preserves to explore in Merrimack and beyond.
