Alabama is home to numerous caves. In fact, the Yellowhammer State has one of the highest densities of caves in the entire U.S. Each year, cavers come from all over the world to experience our caves. One cave in particular is Russell Cave, also known as the Russell Cave National Monument.
Alabama's Russell Cave National Monument is the main feature of a park that's located in Bridgeport. Covering 310 acres, this park is the perfect day trip destination.
Once you arrive, you'll go to the Gilbert Grosvenor Visitor Center. From there, you'll hike one of Alabama's best cave trails.
The Russell Cave Trail is a 2-mile trail that begins as a paved path and then turns into a boardwalk. It'll take you through lots of forest, and you'll also experience...
...some great views during your trek. It should take about 1.5-2 hours for most hikers to complete this easy trail. Russell Cave is also part of the North Alabama Birding Trail.
What makes Russell Cave National Monument one of Alabama's most unique caves is the fact that it contains some of the Southeast's most thorough records of prehistoric culture. In fact, evidence has led many experts to believe this cave was inhabited for more than 10,000 years. Pretty amazing, huh?
And finally, in addition to its incredible history, another reason why so many people enjoy visiting this prehistoric cave is because they can actually stand inside of it and experience what it was like when it was used as shelter many, many, MANY years ago.
