I write like it's my job - because it is! I have a Master's in English and love words: crossword puzzles, Scrabble games, Wordle, and, of course, good, old-fashioned books.
I'm a writer and editor at OnlyInYourState, and a contributing writer at Cincinnati Magazine. I love the Great Outdoors and am endlessly awestruck by this beautiful country of ours. Coffee keeps me going, yoga keeps me sane, my kids keep me grounded, and my writing keeps me inspired.
Sometimes you just need a change of scenery. Not a vacation or a weekend getaway — a simple, straightforward day trip. No need to book accommodations or request major PTO; a day trip offers the chance to shake up your routine and discover some new experiences, some of which might be hiding in your very own backyard! Just 20 minutes from Portland, Hayden Island is our state’s very own inland island, and it’s the perfect Oregon day trip destination.
Hayden Island is just 20 minutes away from Portland, but it feels worlds away from everything.
This inland island is only accessible by boat or bridge, and there's something about taking that extra step to access it that makes the island feel all the more special.
Fun fact: Hayden Island is literally located on the Columbia River, and since much of the island is technically within Portland city limits, this little island iconoclast is actually recognized as one of Portland's 95 neighborhoods.
A true "beach community," between its waterfront locale, outdoor dining, and abundance of water recreation, Hayden Island feels like a vacation -- even if you only visit for a day!
Water recreation is obviously big here, with kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding as popular pastimes in the Columbia River's waters. If that sounds like the ultimate day trip to you, Alder Creek Kayak & Canoe organizes bucket-list-worthy expeditions for adventurers. They offer beginner-level classes, too!
If you prefer land to water, there's a loop hike around Hayden Bay that's about as close to a "long walk on the beach" as it gets. This walking path is about two miles long, and takes an hour to complete.
The Jantzen Beach Bar & Grill is a perennial favorite. Located in the Holiday Inn on Hayden Island, this restaurant is known for its fresh Pacific Northwest cuisine, served in the most scenic of settings.
The Hawaiian Burger is a taste of the Big Island, right here in Oregon!
Hayden Island is our very own island escape -- right here in Oregon. Come and spend the day exploring this little slice of island paradise; we guarantee you'll be charmed!
Of course, we certainly don’t eschew longer types of trips, especially in the beautiful Beaver State! Here’s a dreamy and remote resort for those who really need to get away from it all.
