Riding the back roads of South Carolina can divulge a plethora of hidden gems like the old Poinsett Bridge that crosses Little Gap Creek in rural Greenville County. This now abandoned South Carolina bridge is thought to be one of the most haunted places on earth and once you visit you may begin to understand why.
Built in 1820 as part of a road leading from Charleston to Saluda, North Carolina, Poinsett Bridge just may be the oldest remaining stone bridge in the entire Southeast. It's definitely the oldest stone bridge in South Carolina.
And the bridge, which boasts a 16-foot Gothic arch that allows the creek to pass underneath, is not without natural beauty.
From the hand-cut stones to the 15-foot arched passage underneath and the obvious labor of love it was to construct such a masterpiece, Poinsett is packed with awe-inspiring charm.
But it also has a dark side. A very dark side, if you listen to those who are sensitive to paranormal occurrences.
Voices of disembodied souls are often reported here.
And there are often reports of cars that just plainly refuse to start once visitors are ready to leave.
And then, of course, there are the eerie feelings sensitive folks get just by touring the site.
If you're prone to your hair standing on end as a subtle message that you may have some company from the other side or, better yet, you often walk through cold spots even in the middle of a scorching summer afternoon, then prepare for some of that to happen here.
If you've yet to add a visit to the old Poinsett Bridge to your bucket list, then perhaps this is the year you'll make the trip.
If you want to visit this abandoned South Carolina bridge it’s easy to find – and it’s part of a Greenville County Park, so the park is kept in great condition. Learn more about it with a visit to the official website for Greenille County Parks .
While you’re in the mode of visiting old bridges, travel about 20 minutes from Poinsett Bridge to visit the oldest remaining wooden bridge in South Carolina , too!
