The Portsmouth Music Hall has a deliciously spooky lore. Located on Chestnut Street in the historic downtown, it was built in 1806 during the Victorian era. The hall has since been restored to its original glory and hosts events and programs to this day.
The hall originally was used as a temple for religious concerts, though the simple building burned down in 1876. Two years later, the hall was rebuilt, becoming more secular in its pursuits – and much more opulent in décor.
According to multiple eye-witness accounts, apparitions have been seen walking onstage behind the closed curtains, causing the curtains to flutter. Patrons have also reported a shadowy mist onstage, that gets in the way of actors.
