How much do you know about the state of Delaware? There is a lot of stuff jammed into this tiny gem of a state! Here are some things that come to our mind about this great state, all the way from A to Z.
A is for Agriculture
In Delaware, agriculture contributes $8 billion to the state's economy. Corn, soybeans, chickens and apples are our top crops.
B is for Blue Rocks
Our very own minor league baseball team is named after Delaware's blue granite (rocks) found in the northern part of the state.
C is for Coastal Destinations
Even though we have fewer than 30 miles of coast along the Atlantic Ocean, Delaware beaches are a top regional destination.
D is for DuPont
The name of the family and the company that founded most of Delaware's industrial revolution, from beginnings in gun powder to the present and chemicals.
E is for Ebright Azimuth
Ebright Azimuth is the highest point in the state, at just shy of only 448 feet above sea level.
F is for First State
Thanks to Caesar Rodney, we were the first to ratify the Constitution back on December 7, 1787.
G is for Grotto Pizza
Whether you love it or hate it, Grotto Pizza has locations throughout the state and still has a home base in Rehoboth Beach.
H is for Horseshoe Crabs
Delaware Bay, and primarily Delaware's bay beaches, are a sight to see in May and June when horseshoe crabs come out of the water to lay their eggs. There are more here than any other place in the world!
I is for Industry
Industrial areas are concentrated in the northern part of the state and include chemical corporations, pharmaceutical companies, and manufacturing. I is also stands for 'incorporated'; 60% of all Fortune 500 companies are headquartered here-if only on paper.
J is for Joe and Jill (Biden)
Although they were both born outside the state, the Vice President and his wife have lived here most of their lives and still have a home here. Joe is a proud University of Delaware grad too!
K is for Kalmar Nyckel
The Kalmar Nyckel brought Swedish settlers to North America in 1638, to what is present day Wilmington.
L is for Ladybug
It was named the state insect in 1974.
M is for Milk
Maybe because of the strong presence of dairy farms in the state, milk is the state beverage of Delaware.
N is for New Castle
We have two: a county and a city. We're talking about the city which was settled back in 1651. It was the state capital until 1777.
O is for Our Delaware
It's the official state song! I remember singing it in preschool.
P is for Poultry
Sussex County, Delaware produces more broiler chickens than any other county in the U.S. In Delaware, chickens out number people nearly 300 to 1.
Q is for Quakers
Delaware records show that the first formal meeting of this religious group in the state was back in 1672. There are still historic meeting houses scattered throughout Delaware.
R is for Railroads
In the 1800s many a small town grew around railroad depots that sprung up, up and down the state. Now, freight cars still run along those same routes, and Amtrak cuts through a small sliver of New Castle County.
S is for Second Smallest
At 2,491 square miles, Delaware is the second smallest state in the U.S., with Rhode Island being the smallest at 1,212.
T is for Three
Take your pick. Three counties: New Castle, Kent, Sussex. Three elected members of our federal delegation: two senators and one representative.
U is for Universities
University of Delaware, Delaware State University, and Wilmington University serve students after high school along with several other higher education institutions like Delaware Technical and Community College, Wesley College, and Goldey-Become College.
V is for Vineyards
Miles of vines grow grapes for producing Delaware wines at one of the state's three wineries.
W is for Wildlife
And wildlife areas. And wetlands, both fresh and salt. And apparently wood ducks, like in this photo.
X is for X Marks the Spot
There are tales of old of pirates like Captain Kidd and Blackbeard hiding hidden treasures here in Delaware. If you found it, would you tell anyone?
Y is for YoUDee
Yep. Pronounced 'you-dee', it's the mascot of the University of Delaware-the Fightin' Blue Hens!
Z is for Zwaanendael Museum
Built in 1631, Zwaanendael was Delaware's first European settlement, the site of present day Lewes, DE. The museum opened 300 years later and highlights the history of the area.
