There are all sorts of wonderful waterfalls in Michigan, many of which are easily accessible and nothing short of iconic. Destinations like Tahquamenon Falls and Bond Falls come to mind when we think about famous waterfalls in Michigan, but there’s something special about checking out a spot that’s lesser-known and more difficult to reach. After all, the most challenging journeys often lead to the most rewarding results, and this hidden waterfall in Michigan is proof.
Rock River Falls is located near the community of Deerton (part of Onota Township) in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The trailhead to make the trek to the waterfall sits off USFS 2293.
This gorgeous yet tough-to-reach spot sits within Hiawatha National Forest and is undoubtedly one of Michigan’s most underappreciated waterfalls – largely for the fact that it’s challenging to explore.
To make your way to Rock River Falls, you’ll first need to drive along the rugged USFS road mentioned above. Those who have made the journey previously recommend using a high-clearance vehicle to travel here.
If you’re able to secure a safe and effective ride to the trailhead, you’ll need to lace up your hiking boots and prepare to stroll along a pathway that’s often muddy and wet. Waterproof boots are a major plus.
The trail from the parking area to the falls themselves is approximately 1.8 miles, so it can certainly be completed during an adventurous day trip. The natural beauty here is so worth a bit of extra effort.
Use caution along the trailway, as portions are not as well-defined as you might be used to. As you walk, though, you’ll appreciate breathtaking views of towering trees, greenery, wildlife, and so much more.
Upon reaching the falls themselves, take time to admire the rushing water. The falls consist of a 15-foot drop over limestone formations, a peaceful pool of water, and a truly serene setting that will capture your heart.
While Rock River Falls might not be the most easily accessible waterfall in Michigan, it does rank among the most enchanting – and you’ll be one of the lucky ones if you experience this tough-to-reach destination.
