It’s here that visitors of all ages will find their version of the perfect adventure, and springtime proves to be truly unforgettable. Below we’ve outlined a few ideas for how you can spend an ideal day in Richmond County, from meandering paddle trails to world-class museums, raceways, and charming places to dine.
1. Catch a race at Rockingham Dragway

Got a need for speed? Head to the Rockingham Dragway, an adrenaline-inducing attraction that opened in 1970. Known to locals as "The Rock," this premier quarter-mile track is an excellent spot to watch all kinds of races. Curious to catch an event? When you're ready for a bite to eat, head to Pattan's Downtown Grille, a legendary local establishment that promises to delight. It's here you'll find delicious barbecue and tons of local flavors. While you're there, don't forget to try the famous Pee Dee Swamp Sauce, which is so popular that it's sold in local grocery stores.
To immerse yourself in the great outdoors, you can't go wrong with a trip to Hinson Lake. Tucked away within Rockingham, this city park has a little something for everyone. The recreation area encompasses 216 acres and offers endless opportunities for fishing, hiking, picnicking, and even wildlife viewing. It's also home to the beloved 24-hour ultra classic marathon. While you're there, don't forget to check out the newly-renovated 18-hole disc golf course.
Did you know that Richmond County was home to the world's largest strawberry? This beloved roadside attraction has a fascinating backstory. Head to the Berry Patch and you'll see it for yourself! No matter what time of year you visit, you can look forward to sampling delicious local produce and some sweet treats such as homemade ice cream.
There's something for every kind of outdoor explorer at the Hitchcock Creek Blue Trail and Greenway. From beautiful kayaking routes to wooded trails, picnics, and a playground, you're bound to find an unforgettable way to spend the afternoon. While this area is gorgeous year-round, spring proves to be especially lovely.
6. Take the little ones to Discovery Place

Traveling with the kids? There's no better place to spend a fun-filled day of learning and exploring than Discovery Place in Rockingham. One of three in the state, this facility boasts all kinds of interactive displays to inspire budding scientists of all ages. Of course, this is just one of the many impressive museums in Richmond County.
There's an abundance of small-town charm and southern hospitality to be enjoyed in Richmond County. One of our favorite attractions is Hamlet Depot. Boasting fascinating architecture and historic appeal, it's one of the most photographed train stations on the east coast!
Our trip itinerary concludes with an unforgettable sunset viewing point. One of the highest points in the county, Bethel Church offers the ideal place to catch a sunset or sunrise. As you observe the sky transform into an array of gorgeous colors, you can reflect on all of your Richmond County adventures.
